DAILY REVIEW 9/9/1911 PAGE 1

Isaac Drake Jennings sheriff of Macon county forty years ago and one of the countys oldest residents died Saturday morning at 11 oclock at his residence, one and one half miles west of Forsyth, from infirmities of age. His death was not sudden or unexpected as he had been in a feeble condition since early last spring and was taken seriously ill two or three weeks ago.
The body will be brought to Decatur and taken to the residence of his daughter, Mrs.Mollie M. Haines,62 W. William street, Sunday morning. The funeral arrangements will be announced later.
In the passing of the veteran ends an eventful career of one of Macon countys greatest old settlers. He was born near Plaifield in Somerset county, N. J. on July 10, 1825 and lived on the farm there for seventeen years. Then he took up the carpenter trade serving as an apprentice for four years. In 1850 he came west and settled near Jacksonville. He remained there but three years ago when he picked Macon county for a future home and in 1858 settled here.
He followed the carpenters trade until the war broke out. Then he helped to organize Co.B. of the 116th Illinois and was a member of the company himself. He was unable to attend the recent reunion held by that regiment owing to his illness. During the war he marched with Sherman to the sea and was injured, both in the head and the hand. This caused his blindness in one eye and the injury to his hand incapicated him as a carpenter.
In 1872 and 18? he was elected sheriff. He also served as deputy sheriff and a city marshal. He built many of the oldest houses and buildings in Decatur and remembered about history as any other resident.
Mr.Jennings married Caroline Hunter in 1852 and to the union were born two children,Mrs. Mollie M.Haines of Decatur and B.T. Jennings of Casner. There were five grandchildren as follows: Edwin J.Haines of chicago , Mrs.Ada H.Stoner of Decatur,Wilmer G. Jennings,R. B. Jennings and Roy Jennings all of Casner. There are two great grandchildren, Seth Haines Stoner and Nathan Haines.
On Oct 24, 1886 he married Miss Ellen Hawkins and to this union one son Isaac Howard Jennings was born.
