HORTON --- Anna Mae Mapes, 83, Horton, died Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002, at a Topeka hospital.

Mrs. Mapes and her husband farmed north of Netawaka until 1988. She also taught school at Fostoria, Circleville, Powhattan and Wetmore for 29 years.

She was born April 20, 1919, in Hamlin, the daughter of Abraham and Minnie Wells Kern. She graduated from Hamlin High School in 1937, from Highland College in 1939 and from Kansas State university in 1941.

Mrs. Mapes was a charter member of the Netawaka Senior Citizens, the United Methodist Church in Netawaka, the Wetmore Study Club and she was a former member of the Jackson County Nursing Home in Holton. She later joined the United Methodist Church in Horton and was a member of United Methodist Women and the History and Literature Club.

She married Columbus "Pete" Mapes on May 14, 1944, south of Hamlin. He survives.

Other survivors include a son, Bob Mapes, Fairway; a daughter, Janet Dunn, Germantown, Wis.; and six grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Horton. Burial will be in Horton Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton.

Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church and sent in care of the mortuary.
