Obituary (detailing his life)

Lewis, Paul E.,
February 21, 2010
Paul Edward Lewis On Thursday, February 18, 2010, Paul Lewis left this life to go home to the Lord. Almost all his family surrounded him to say goodbye while he was alert and aware. He passed away peacefully in the company of his wife of nearly 60 years, Glorina, and 30 family members and friends standing in his intensive care room. We prayed, cried, and told him of our love for him and, though unable to speak due to a respirator, he expressed his love to us. Paul was the patriarch of a great family. He was a WW II veteran, owner of Auburn Plastics & Rubber Co., Inc., past member and president of the Indianapolis Board of School Commissioners, past PTA President of Arsenal Technical H.S., member and Past Commander of the American Legion Post 500 and active member of Maple Creek Country Club, where he was a past "Man of the Year" and where he enjoyed golf and playing cards with his buddies. Paul was a brilliant golfer who, just months ago, was still beating guys in their fifties. He was also a past winner of the World Series of Golf Amateur Tournament. After being married there in 1950, he remained a faithful, active member of Gethsemane Evangelical Lutheran Church. He was incredibly generous with his hard-earned money and went out of his way to help others. More than that, he was a great husband, brother, dad, father-in-law, grandpa, great-grandpa, and uncle. He was an honorable man of integrity who intensely loved God, his country, his family, and his friends. Paul was born in Dayton, Ohio, on October 2, 1925. He was the 7th and youngest child of Herman and Georgia (Smith) Lewis. As a US Navy veteran, he served in the Asia-Pacific Naval Amphibious Forces in WW II, where he was involved in conflicts at Saipan, Tinian, Okinawa, and Iwo Jima, where he eye-witnessed the raising of the flag on Mount Seribachi. Paul was a graduate of Spencer (IN) H.S. He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as three siblings, Fred, Kenneth, and Robert Lewis. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Glorina (Anderson) Lewis, whom he had known since 3rd grade at Ft. McKinley Grade School in Dayton. He is also survived by his six children, Cindy (J.D.) Hartshorn, Laurie (Danny) Wood, Julie (Jeff) Stoner, David (Lynn) Lewis, Debbie (Tom) Steinmetz, and Beth (Bob) Brucks; three siblings, Richard Lewis, Howard Lewis, and Virginia Hicks, 15 grandchildren, Amanda, Adam and Austin Hartshorn; Melissa (Jon) Peter and Danny (Brenda) Wood; Sarah, Aaron, and Matthew Stoner; Christopher, Emily, and Bradley Lewis; Riley, Jordan, and Hillary Steinmetz; and Will Brucks; great-grandchildren, Penelope and Evelyn Peter and Weston Wood; his sister-in-law Carol Harbin and her children, as well as many nieces, nephews, other family & friends. A service in celebration of his life will be held on Monday, February 22, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Gethsemane Lutheran Church, 6810 E. 10th Street, Indianapolis. Visitation will be Sunday, February 21, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Washington Park Cemetery Community Life Center, 10612 E. Washington Street, Indianapolis, Indiana. Memorial contributions can be made to the Arsenal Technical High School Music Department, 1500 E. Michigan Street, Indianapolis, IN 46201, or to Gethsemane Lutheran Church at the address above. Online condolences may be shared with his family at: flanner-buchanan.com. Paul is now at peace and filled with joy for all eternity, and all his loved ones will soon see him when we go to meet the Lord. BUT--we already miss him terribly. Please pray comfort, peace, and guidance for his family as we learn to steer the ship without his strong hand.
