Lieutenant
1st Battalion
Coldstream Guards
British Army
He was deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.
Lt Dalzell was killed in an explosion during Operation Moshtarak in the Babaji area of Nahr-e-Saraj in central Helmand province.
Lt Dalzell joined the army in 2007, graduated from Sandhurst and received his commission into the Coldstream Guards that December. After passing the Platoon Commanders' Battle Course in April 2008 he took over his first platoon in Number 3 Company and quickly established himself as an extremely capable young officer. While based in Windsor, he was busy with state ceremonial and public duties as well as leading his troops in pre-deployment training. He moved to Number 1 Company, Number 2 Platoon and deployed to Afghanistan in October 2009. Described as brilliant, inspirational and charismatic, he was respected by all ranks and destined for great things in the army.
From Hamstead Marshall, near Newbury in Berkshire, "Dougie" died on his 27th birthday. He leaves behind his parents Anthony and Colette, brother Angus and sister Olivia, along with other family and friends.
Private funeral with full military honours was held on March 11, 2010 at St Mary's Church, Hamstead Marshall.
In September 2010, Lt Dalzell was posthumously awarded the Military Cross for his acts of bravery during combat operations.
