US MARINE CORPS WORLD WAR II

James D Bachtell enlisted in the Marine Corps 1 October, 1942 from Sioux City, Iowa. Completed recruit training in the 7th Recruit Training Battalion, MCB San Diego, CA. Volunteered for Parachute Training School, MCB Camp Gillespie, CA and after designation as a Parachutist promoted to Private First Class. 8 January, 1943 assigned to A Company, 3rd Parachute Battalion, Amphibious Troops, Pacific Fleet, MCB Camp Elliott, CA.

14 March, 1943 embarked USS Mount Vernon (AP-22) at San Diego for movement overseas. 25 March, 1943 arrived at Noumea, New Caledonia based at Camp Kiser, Tontouta. 1 April, 1943 A Company redesignated I Company, 3rd Parachute Battlion, 1st Parachute Regiment, I Marine Amphibious Corps (IMAC). 26 September, 1943 embarked the USS American Legion (APA-17) at Noumea 29 September, 1943 arrived at Guadalcanal. 13 October, 1943 embarked an LST. 14 October, 1943 landed on Vella La Vella. 3 December, 1944 embarked an LCI at Vella La Vella.

4 December, 1943 - 15 January, 1944 participated in combat operations on Bougainville where he was Wounded in Action. 15 January, 1944 embarked an LST at Bougainville. 18 January, 1944 debarked at Tassaforanga Point, Guadalcanal. 29 January, 1944 embarked USAT David C Shanks at Guadalcanal. 14 February, 1944 arrived at San Diego and based at Camp Elliott, CA. Given 30 day furlough.

21 March, 1944 assigned as Mortarman (MOS 607)in C Company, 1st Battalion, 28th Marines, 5th Marine Division, MCB Camp Pendleton, CA. 19 September, 1944 embarked US Navy transport ship for movement overseas. 24 September, 1944 arrived at Hilo, Hawaii based at Camp Tarawa near Kamuela. Promoted to Corporal.

10 January, 1945 embarked an LST at Camp Drewes, Hawaii for landing rehearsals. 17 January, 1945 embarked USS Dickens (APA-161) at Lahaini Roads, Maui. 18-27 January, 1945 at Pearl Harbor. 5-7 February, 1945 at Eniwetok, Marshalls. 11 February, 1945 embarked an LST at Saipan. 13 February, 1945 landing rehearsal at Tinian. 16 February, 1945 left Marianas.

19 February, 1945 landed Green Beach Iwo Jima D-Day and participated in combat operations until Wounded in Action 4 March, 1945.

Evacuated to USN Base Hospital # 18 on Guam where Died of Wounds on 18 April, 1945.

Next of Kin: Guardians, Mrs Blanche Dunkleberg, Rockford, Iowa. Mr W. J. Rutherford family, Manchester, Iowa.

Initially buried in Plot C, Row 25, Grave 22, USAF Cemetery Guam # 2 at Agat, Guam.

1948 returned to US for permanent burial in Grant View Cemetery, Greeley, Iowa.
