He attended the parochial school at Hanover through 8th grade. and graduated from Alta High School. On the football field, he earned the nickname "Rabbit," and earned a scholarship to Morningside College.

In 1959, he enlisted in the US Army and served in the Korean Conflict, receiving an honorable discharge in 1951.

May 9, 1954, he married Marie Glienke at St. John Lutheran Church, Hanover. The had 4 children: Debra, Donna, Denise, and a stillborn son.

Throughout his life, he was an active member of his church and community including, various church offices, LCMS District board, district president and regional governor of the International Lutheran Laymens League, a position that presented the opportunity to travel the United States "brings Christ to the nations and the nations to the church." Some highlights of his work with the L.L.L. were a two-week service project to Tisovec, Slovakia and decorating the Lutheran Hour float in Pasadena, Calif., for the Rose Bowl Parade." He also was a member of the Alta Co-op board, Farm Bureau board, Kiwanis, Alta Golf and Country Club, Galva American Legion and Alta Veterans of Foreign Wars.

For the past 15 years, the couple wintered in Arizona, enjoying his favorite activities of golfing, bowling, playing cards and spending time with fellow snowbirds and his church family at St. Luke's in Mesa, Ariz. Anyone who knew Lyle could always rely on him to have a good joke.

Left to carry on his memory are his wife, Marie of Alta; three daughters, Debra and her husband, Don Aldridge of Scottsdale, Ariz., Donna and her husband, Richard Hartmann of Spencer, Iowa, and Denise and her husband, Kenneth Hinkeldey of Alta; grandchildren, Steven Botcher and his fiancee, Nicolle of Alta, Nicole Botcher of Austin, Texas, Megan Bishop of Mequon, Wis., Shelby Hartmann of Spencer, Iowa, and Kenneth Bishop and Jason Hinkeldey, both of Alta; a sister-in-law, Ruth Lichtenberg of Dunlap; a nephew, Joel and Candi Lichtenberg of Owings Mills Md.; a niece, Gretchen and Virgil Peterson of Dunlap, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends.

Survivors include his stillborn son; a brother, Roger Lichtenberg; a granddaughter, Amanda Hartmann; two brothers-in-law, Henry Glienke and Harold Christensen; two sisters-in-law, Esther Lussman and Alvina Schmidt; and two sons-in-law, Bruce Botcher and Keith Bishop.
