Washington L 'Wash' James (1819-1902) was the son of Elijah James (1785-1855) and Rachel Long (1796-1855). His parents immigrated from North Carolina and Tennessee. He married twice. His first wife was Margaret Lindsey (1832-1866) with whom he had 3 children. Margaret left Washington and took up with Lewis Matthew Hazelip (1832-1910). After a few years without a wife, Washington married ARBANA F BUTRAM on 21 Sept. 1860 in Edmonson County, Ky.

Washington's second wife, Arbana was also divorced after her first husband, Jouran (or Jordian) Buttram left her. Her marriage to Buttram was in 1854 in Scott County, Tennessee when she was 14 years old. She married Washington James in 1860.

Washington James' children are as follows:

Children with Margaret Lindsey:

Mary Francis James (1847-1930)
Sarah Ann James (1848-1923)
Lillian Alice James (1853-1927)

Children with Arbana F 'Polly' Buttram:

Columbus Marion 'Lum' James (1860-1946)
William Bailey James (1861-1919)
Miranda Jane James (1863-1906)
Rhumsey T James (1864-1874)
Thomas Alvin 'Al' James (1866-1947)
George Aldolphus 'Dolph' James (1870-1941)
Luther James (1873-1949)

Y-DNA (obtained from his Great-Great grandson, William Frank James Sr): J-FGC52332

Note about James Y-DNA:

The James' trace their roots to England in the Middle-Ages. A J2 Y-DNA Haplgroup is rare in England. Haplogroup J accounts for about 2% of the population of England. J2 is about 20% of that (or roughly .4% of the population). Originally it is from the Middle East (thousands of years ago)

The earliest Direct KNOWN ancestor for Washington James and his kin is William Laban James Sr, Born in 1734 in North Carolina. However, extensive DNA testing of various James in the early 21st century indicates a connection to a branch of James' who immigrated from Hingham, Norfolk, England in 1634 on the Ship 'Diligent' and established the town of Hingham, Mass.

Further research connects both Washington James' line and the Hingham James line to a group of James' in the middle-ages who lived in Rockland, St. Peter, Norfolk, England as early as 1400.
