Robert W. Markgraf, a resident of Sunrise of Abington, formerly of Roslyn, PA, died January 23, 2009 at Abington Memorial Hospital. He was 87 years old. Mr. Markgraf was born September 12, 1921, the son of the late Andreas Markgraf and the late Lillie Markgraf (nee - Polsenberg). He is the loving husband of Alice Elizabeth “Betty” Markgraf (nee - Laverty) and the father of Daniel Markgraf and his wife Jeanette of Abington, PA, Nancy Hassell and her husband Thomas of New Hope, PA, Steven Markgraf and his wife Joyce of Maple Grove, Minnesota and Gail Labanara and her husband Howard of Seattle, WA. He is the grandfather of Brandon, Douglas, Evan and Zachary Markgraf, Michael, Andrew and Allison Hassell and Christopher and Elizabeth Markgraf. He was predeceased by his three siblings, Margaret, Helena and Andreas.
Mr. Markgraf was born, raised and educated in Philadelphia, graduating from the old Northeast High School and from Drexel University in the city. After his graduation from High School he worked from November 1940 to April of 1944 as a tool maker at the Frankford Arsenal in Philadelphia in their apprentice program and then in their small arms department. He was inducted into the U.S. Navy on January 21, 1944 and served on the USS Griffen during World War Two. He was discharged on June 6, 1946, reaching the rank of Special Artificer, third class. After the war he attended and then graduated from the Mechanical Engineering School at Drexel University and then returned to work at the Frankford Arsenal for thirty seven years as a mechanical engineer and designer, where his designs garnered numerous patents. He retired when the Arsenal closed. Mr. Markgraf was a charter member of the Roslyn Lions Club where he remained active through the 1980’s. He also was an accomplished metal and wood worker, building furniture for both family and friends. His annual handcrafted Christmas decorations were a highlight of the season for those who received them. He and his wife attended St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Glenside and were former members of St. Simeon’s Episcopal Church in Philadelphia, where they were married 59 years ago.
Relatives and friends were invited to his funeral service Tuesday, January 27, 2009 at 11:30 A.M. at the Wetzel and Son Funeral Home, 501 North Easton Road, Willow Grove, PA. 19090, where friends were invited to call after 10:30 A.M.
A cemetery service at Whitemarsh Memorial Park, 1169 Limekiln Pike, Prospectville, PA 19002 followed the funeral service. Religious services were conducted by The Rev. Fr. E. F. Michael Morgan, Ph.D from St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 654 North Easton Road, Glenside, PA 19038.
