Sam Werner Wilborn, M.D.

Sam W. Wilborn passed away on Christmas day, 2006. He was born March 12, 1916 in Snyder, Texas to Sam Neal and Alice Werner Wilborn.

Dr. Wilborn attended public school in Snyder until 1929 when his family moved to Austin. He graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School and the University of Texas at Austin. He received his M.D. Degree from the University of Texas Medical School at Galveston in 1941.

In his own words, his life was more than abundantly blessed. His most profound blessing was his marriage to Margaret McKinney (Macky) of Carrizo Springs on June 21, 1941. In their 65 years together she was his unwavering, ever kind, ever generous soul mate; his supporter in all that he did.

Dr. Wilborn served in the U.S. Army as a Captain from June 1943 until March 1946. He was a Medical Officer Internist with the 127th General Hospital in England and France. His unit was largely comprised of classmates from UT Medical School. Many of those friendships remained dear for a lifetime.

After the war he did a residency in pediatrics at Childrens Medical Center in Dallas. He began private practice as a pediatrician in the front room of a rented house in Austin in 1948. He later moved his office to the Medical Arts Square on Red River with Dr.'s Clifford and Lansing Thorne. His extended family grew to include hundreds of families whose children he cared for until his retirement in 1976. The warm greetings from patients and their parents were a routine occurrence in most trips out in public.

Young Sam Wilborn was treated by his father with a trip from Snyder to Abilene to see the then U.S. touring Charles Lindberg in 1927. Sam never looked back. Flying became his avocational passion. He earned a private pilot's license in 1932 riding a bicycle to work and then to flying lessons. He flew for 66 years with the same conscientiousness as he gave his practice of medicine.

After retirement Sam and Macky spent the majority of their time for 20 years at their place in Llano County. A big garden, a handful of cows, lots of chores, and great neighbors kept them fit, tanned, and smiling.

Sam and Macky Wilborn have been members of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Austin for 55 years. Their involvement as elders and on various committees has been central in their lives. Their church community and their faith have sustained them through the happiest and the hardest of times.

Dr. Wilborn is survived by his wife, Macky ; son, Paul & wife Shirley of Lampasas and their children, David Rathman & Kellie Jones of Lampasas; a son, Marshall & wife Lynn Morris of Winchester, VA; a sister, Sarah Torrace of East Lansing, MI; a sister-in-law, Margaret Wilborn of Houston; a special niece, Alice White of Richardson; along with many other nieces, great nieces, a nephew and great nephews; and two great grandchildren, Kobe & Dylan Jones.

The Wilborn family extends special gratitude to Maria Vasquez, Laura Trevino, Hope Good, Janie Chavira, Jazmin Wusterhausen, Maurice Bell, and the staff of Practical Care Continuum for their kindness and genuine dedication; and for Joy at the Summit for her exceptional care during our final hours.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Friday December 29, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 3208 Exposition Blvd., Austin, 78703. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the charity or scholarship of choice or Alzheimers Association at www. alz.org or 225 N. Michigan Ave. Floor 17 Chicago, B. 60601-7633.
