John was the first child of Hugh Reese Lockett, Sr. 1802-1858 and Sarah Elizabeth Woodward Lockett 1810-1876. His father Hugh was born in Monroe County, Georgia, died in Murphreesboro, Tennessee, and was buried in Tallapoosa County, Alabama, where his family had lived since the 1840s. John's mother Sarah was also born in Monroe County, Georgia and died in Tallapoosa County, Alabama. Their memorials have not yet been located.

John was the grandson of Abner Lockett, Sr. 1764-1827 and Martha "Patsy" Reese 1775-after 1830. Abner was from Buckingham County, Virginia and died in Monroe County, Georgia. Patsy was also from Virginia and is probably buried in Monroe County, Georgia.

John was the great grandson of Lt. David Lockett 1735-1796 and Sally Lucy Winfrey 1738-1787, both from Buckingham County, Virginia. They both died in Warren County, Georgia, where David was given land for his service in the American Revolutionary War.

(John is my 2nd cousin, 3x removed, David and Sally Lockett are my 4th great grandparents - Mike Lockett)

John had four brothers, Orren Woodward, Hugh Reese, Winfield Jackson and David Rodney, and three sisters, Martha Ann, Elizabeth "Dolly" and Mary Catherine.

All five brothers, John, Orren, Hugh, Winfield and David, served in the 1st Alabama Infantry Regiment in the CSA. One brother, Winfield Jackson Lockett 1840-1863, was killed in the Civil War at Port Hudson, East Baton Rough Parrish, Louisiana.

John served the CSA in Company G in 1862, and later Company B in 1864, the 1st Alabama Infantry Regiment Conscripts. After the war ended he signed the Oath of Allegiance to the United States of America on May 26, 1865. The oath describes him as 5 ft 8 in tall, light hair, blue eyes, and a fair complexion.

John married Elizabeth Brazell on December 16, 1849 in Tallapoosa County, Alabama. They had five children, three sons and two daughters. They lived in Red Ridge for most of their time they were in Tallapoosa County.

Their children were:

James Thomas Lockett 1851-1854
Sarah Virginia Lockett 1853-1915
Abner Brazell Lockett 1825-1926
