John's mother Sarah was also born in Monroe County, Georgia and died in Tallapoosa County, Alabama. Their memorials have not yet been located.

John married Elizabeth Brazell on December 16, 1849 in Tallapoosa County, Alabama. They had five children, three sons and two daughters. They lived in Red Ridge for most of their time they were in Tallapoosa County.
