INMAN REVIEW, April 14, 1896:
"DIED: On Tuesday night, April 14,1896, Mrs. J.N. Smith, aged about 29 years. The funeral services were held at the house, three miles west of town, Wednesday afternoon conducted by Rev. Jens of the Evangelical church and the remains were buried in the North Side cemetery followed by a large number of sorrowing friends. Mrs. Smith was a patient sufferer with cancer for seven long years. Several operations were performed but to no avail, the Master had called her and she must go. She leaves a husband to mourn her death. He has the sympathy of all his friends in his sad loss."
