Mary was the wife of John "Johnny" Aaron Hyde who was born in Burke County. They married in Haywood County on Oct. 15, 1818. She was the daughter of John and Jane Swearingam Beck who had migrated to Haywood from Lincoln County between 1804 and 1806. (They later settled on Oconolufty River). Between 1838 and 1839, Johnny and Polly, with their children, moved to the Cheoah Valley in what is now Graham County and settled at the mouth of Long Creek. Later they moved to the old Rube Rogers place on Tallulah.

It was said Polly was a very small lady, never weighing more that 90 pounds. She died from phlebitis or what was called "milk leg" in those days.

Polly and Johnny raised nine children: B. A., Jamily Caroline, Elizabeth Anne, John A., Jason S., Humphrey Posey, David Elder, William J., and Polly Juletta.

After Polly died, Johnny remarried and had six more children.
