Chattahoochee Hills Police Officer Mike Vogt died from wounds from a high-powered weapon Monday while driving down a dirt road near the intersection of Rico Road and Vernon Grove Road in South Fulton County.

Police from multiple jurisdictions were on the lookout Monday for three men in a late 1980s or early 1990s model Chrysler. The car was thought to be in the general area of Hutchenson Ferry Road, near the Coweta County line.

Vogt was pronounced dead after a helicopter rushed him to a hospital, Col. Jeff Holmes of the Fulton County Sheriff's Department told Atlanta news media.

The officer had reversed his car about 50 yards and was able to call for help at about 12:30 p.m. before succumbing to his injuries. Fellow officers soon arrived and administered first aid. WSB TV's news helicopter flew over the scene and video showed a Chattahoochee Hills police car sideways across a dirt road in the rural area.

Vogt worked as a lieutenant at the Union City police department prior to joining the Chattahoochee Hills police force in December 2008. The Public Safety Department for the City of Chattahoochee Hills said at the time that Vogt had more than 30 years of experience in law enforcement and security experience.

In one online networking profile, Vogt said he served as vice-president of a security firm, Global Resource Group, Inc., prior to working at the Union City police department. He had also worked at Tri-Starr Investigations. Vogt had lived previously in Oklahoma and Wisconsin.

Vogt was certified as a firearms instructor, crime scene technician and arson investigator. He was also a licensed private investigator.

Vogt had been recognized with some other local officers and safety officials by the Chattahoochee Hills city manager last July following a serious accident at South Fulton Parkway and Cochran Mill Road, when a truck pulling six horses and a Jeep Grand Cherokee with five passengers collided.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is handling the investigation.

"It's obvious from the emotions at the scene that a lot of people from the responding departments knew him," Holmes said. "We will be turning up the heat and trying to find the perpetrators of this horrific crime."
