Idina Sackville was said to be 'the Bolter' of Nancy Mitford's novel The Pursuit of Love. Though not conventionally beautiful she dazzled men & women alike, and made a habit of marrying whenever she fell in love - five husbands in all & lovers without number.
Her father was the 8th Earl De La Warr. Her first husband was (David) Euan Wallace (m.1913 div. 1919 - 2 children), then Charles Gordon (m.1919 div.1923), Josslyn Hay 22nd Earl of Erroll (m.1923 div.1929 1 child - d. 1941 unsolved murder), Donald Haldeman (m.1930 div.1938), and finally Vincent Soltau (m.1939 div. 1945).
After WW1 she moved with her second husband to Kenya where she became known as the high priestess of the scandalous 'Happy Valley Set' indulging in a life of upper-class delinquency & glamour.
Her biography 'The Bolter' by Frances Osborne (Pub. A.A. Knopf, New York 2009)is well worth reading
