United States Navy Rear Admiral.

During the Civil War he served on the "USS Wabash", participating in the capture of forts at Hatteras Inlet, Fort Walker and Beauregard, the engagement at Port Royal, and the capture of Fort Pulaski.

Son of United States Congressman William Wallace Irwin and his first wife Frances Everallyn Rose Irwin.
