Obituary for THOMAS S COOPER
Ex-Sheriff of Mecklenburg County Expires Suddenly Last Night While Sitting at His Home
One of the Best Known Men in the County.
(-Please notice that this obituary is in his brother Adam's name---so much for "well known".-BF&JH-)
Adam W. Cooper, [sic] ex-Sheriff of Mecklenburg county, died suddenly at his home, No. 716 North Brevard street, aged 63 years. The last summons came at 10:30 o'clock, while the old man was sitting in his chair. There was no chance for medicinal assistance, although several physicians were immediately called when Mr. Cooper was stricken. The funeral services will be conducted at Steel[sic] Creek church to-day, at 4:30, by the Rev. Lucian D. Noel.
In the death of Mr. Cooper the county has lost one of its best known men locally. He had virtually retired from active work, but was a member of the firm of Cooper & Lewis, furniture dealers. Few men in Mecklenburg county had a larger acquaintance than he, and he was generally popular.
Mr. Cooper attended church twice yesterday, and took a drive in the afternoon, seemingly in the best of health. He had not complained at all, although several weeks ago he fell from a conveyance and was supposed to have hurt himself badly; but even this accident had no appreciable effect on him. He was sitting quietly in his home last night, when he became suffocated, and died almost immediately. To heart disease is ascribed his death.
A wife and three children, Misses Hattie and Ada and Frank Cooper, survive him. Mr. Cooper was an elder in the East Side chapel of the Presbyterian church here. He came to Charlotte some years ago from Berryhill township.

Ex-Sheriff Cooper is Seriouly Hurt.
As a result of falling from his furniture van on West Fifth street yesterday afternoon, ex-Sheriff T. S. Cooper sustained painful injuries and had his right ear almost torn from his head. He was carried home and will recover, though his injuries are painful. He had been sitting in the back of the van when a sudden lurch of the conveyance caused him to fall out backwards.
