James A. Clampitt was the son of Richard Arlen and Lydia Floyd Carter Clampitt. He grew up on his father's plantation, Huckleberry Hill. He was attending college when Mississippi seceded from the union. In June, 1861, James and his brothers, Richard and William joined Co. E, 21st Mississippi Infantry Regiment (Hurricane Rifles) under Capt. Isaac Davis Stamps. In September, the 21st became a part of the Army of Northern Virginia. On September 22, 1862 James was discharged from the army because of a gunshot wound in his right arm that left his arm useless. On Jan 4, 1864, James married Miss Emily Green at Woodville, Mississippi. In 1876 they moved to Seiver County, Arkansas. Their children were James b.1865, Ellen b.1872 and Amanda b.1877.
