BIBB, JAMES WRIGHT, James Wright Bibb, 93, of Portland passed away Thursday, February 11, 2010 at the Christian Health Center.

His parents first moved to Louisville in order to enroll their children in the new Portland Christian School, from which he graduated and was a lifelong member and supporter of its alumni association, where he also served one term as vice president. He was a long time member of the Portland Avenue Church of Christ.

He was a Marine veteran of World War II and a member of the Louisville Police Department from 1941-1967, retiring as a lieutenant. He then began his second career as a real estate broker and general insurance agent. He purchased the historic Portland Health Clinic building for his business, JWB Real Estate, where he served the Portland area as realtor and landlord until 2005. He was an avid reader and competitor, enjoying card games, and prior to his retirement from the LPD for work related injuries, he enjoyed fishing and horseshoes.

Jim was a member and officer of multiple business, civic and fraternal organizations, including the Audubon and Downtown High Twelve Clubs, serving as president to both, secretary of High Twelve International, and president, vice president and secretary of the KY-AL-TN Association of High Twelve Clubs. He was a member of the Louisville Board of Realtors, Louisville Chamber of Commerce, Optimist International, charter member and vice president of the West Louisville Optimist Club and charter member of the Portland Optimist Club; and served terms as president, vice president and secretary of the Portland Business Association. He was a board member of Senior House Inc., president and board member of Senior House West, and a board member of the Louisville Memorial Hospital. He was also a member of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels, the American Legion and the National Rifle Association.

He was very active in politics and served as two-term alderman for the City of Louisville. He was a member of multiple Democratic Clubs, including the Mid-Town (past president), Mose Green, North End (two-term board member), South End and Twelfth Ward. He was appointed by Governor Breathitt as investigator for a newly formed Kentucky Crime Victims' Compensation Board.

Jim was a member of the principle team that created the Fraternal Order of Police, Louisville Lodge No. 6, serving as its charter vice president and second year president. He was a graduate of the first class of the Southern Police Institute, the first such college-based program in the South, and subsequently taught Criminal Law to LPD recruit classes. He attended the University of Louisville for two years, studying pre-law. He was a life member of the Commanding Officers' Club of the Louisville Division of Police.

He was also life member of the Lewis Lodge No. 191, F. & A.M., serving as its secretary for 30 years; a 50 year member of the Scottish Rite and the AAONMS-Kosair Temple Shrine Club, where he was a member of the provost guard.

He is preceded in death by his beloved parents, Mary Ellen Bibb and Noble Bibb; and his brother, William.

Survivors are his wife of nearly 70 years Elizabeth Alice (Henderson) Bibb; daughters Alice R. Keeling and Judy A. Callahan; son-in-law Phil W. Keeling; grandsons Christopher W. Keeling and Michael B. Callahan; granddaughter-in-law Lisa (Frederick) Callahan; great-granddaughter Erin Elizabeth Callahan; sister Loretta Tabler; and multiple nieces and nephews.

"Jim" was an affectionate, giving husband, father and grandfather, and his great-granddaughter was his delight.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at J.B. Ratterman & Sons Funeral Home, 2114 West Market Street with burial in Cave Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be noon - 6 p.m. Sunday and after 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
