Mrs. James H. Barber, for 41 years a resident of Newberry died at her home on Phelps Street at 6:30 a. m. on the morning February 27th. Born in Kansas on January 20, 1871
Louisa Jane Hoyt came to Michigan with her family when she was a young girl. She was married to James Barber in Big Rapids 44 years ago, the family moving soon to Newberry where Mr. Barber has been engaged in the dray business. For the past several years he has been agent for the Standard Oil Company.
To the couple has been born six children, five of whom lived to grow up and all making their home in Newberry. Ethel is Mrs. Leo Miller, Earl, James Jr.. Frank and Miss Rilla, all at their mother's bedside at her passing. There are three grand children.
The funeral plans are not yet completed but it is believed that the funeral will be held on Sunday, March 1st. Mrs. Barber leaves two brothers and six sisters in various parts of the United States, all of them too aged to be able to come.
This is the third time this winter that death has come to the Barber family. A brother of James H., John Barber, was killed by the village pet deer late in November of this year, and another brother, Frederick, died on February 24th in Gould City.
Mrs. Barber has been seriously ill for more than a year of a liver ailment. In December she was taken to Ann Arbor but nothing could be done to her. She has been confined to her home since last autumn and her death has been expected at any time for the past several weeks. The family have the sympathy of the community in their bereavement.
