James D. Ates, 85, of Laurel, died Saturday, May 19, 2007, at his residence.
Services will be 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Memory Chapel Funeral Home with burial to follow in Lake Park Hills Cemetery. Rev. Randy Turner will officiate.
He served in the U.S. Army in World War II and retired from Masonite after 21 years of service. He was member of First Baptist Church of Laurel.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William D. and Rosie Viola Ates; brothers, John Ates and Lester Ates; sister, Merle Walters; and two wives, Evelyn Bender Ates and Frances Howell Ates.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Walters Ates of Laurel; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Alan Morgan of Laurel; step-daughters Jan Howell Campbell of Hattiesburg, and Leah Doggett and her husband, Jerry, of Laurel; three stepsons and their wives, Greg and Karen Walters of Laurel, Roger and Pam Walters of Laurel, and Mitch and Nora Howell of Dover, Del.; two sisters, Elsie Kreider of Huntsville, Ala., and Rena Ponder of Madison; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Pallbearers will be Greg Walters, Roger Walters, Steve Guy, Reid Guy, Calen Lambert and Jim Kreider. Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Doggett and Howard Busby.
Visitation is 5-8 p.m. today at Memory Chapel Funeral Home which is in charge of arrangements.
