U.S. Congressman. Moving to New Jersey, he was successful in cement manufacturing, was a member of the common council of Plainfield, New Jersey, (1891-1920 and a member of the New Jersey State Senate, (1905-11). He was a member of the board of trustees of Rutgers College, (1916-20), Federal food administrator for Union County during World War I, a member of the New Jersey State board of education, (1918-20), plus a member of the New Jersey Geological Survey and associate of the American Society of Civil Engineers. In 1919, he was elected as a Republican to the Sixty-sixth Congress and to the next six succeeding Congresses, serving until his death at age 68.
