Martha "Marcie" Bremer Childs, a longtime volunteer, died Monday (June 2, 2003) from heart and lung complications at St. John's Mercy Medical Center in Creve Coeur. She was 79 and a resident of Kirkwood.

Mrs. Bremer Childs was born in Okawville, Ill. As a young adult, she was a Sunday school teacher and a vacation Bible school superintendent. As her children were growing up, she added the roles of den mother, Girl Scout leader and youth counselor. She served as a choir and church council member in several Lutheran churches, including Concordia Lutheran Church in Kirkwood.

She married Gus Bremer in 1948. He died in 1972. Her second marriage was to Clayton "Bud" Childs in 1976. He died in 1984.

Mrs. Bremer Childs later became a charter member of Holy Spirit Lutheran Church, which later was merged to form the St. Thomas and Holy Spirit Lutheran Church in Sunset Hills. As a member there, she was delegate to a Synod Assembly and on a board of the Central State Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

In 1974, she was involved in the founding of the Evangelical Lutherans in Mission and set up its first office in her Kirkwood home. ELIM was the original support partner for Concordia Seminary in Exile and Partners in Mission.

Mrs. Bremer Childs was active in Lutheran Family and Children Services, the Lay Lutheran School of Theology in St. Louis and the St. Louis Advisory Council of International Partners in Mission. She was involved in the Assistance League of St. Louis, a group that identifies, develops, implements and funds projects to serve specific needs of children and adults.

A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Concordia Lutheran Church, 505 South Kirkwood Road in Kirkwood. A reception at the church will follow. Mrs. Bremer Childs donated her body to St. Louis University School of Medicine.

Among survivors are two sons, Mark Bremer of Chesterfield and Chris Bremer of Chicago; a daughter, Cindy Nashua of New Hampshire; and nine grandchildren.
