Agnes was the second of nine children born to William and Mary Bowen Jones. She came to America as a young girl along with her family. She married Reuben Alexander Dodge and together they had eight children, Elmer Leslie, Ruby Amelia, William Lester, Harry Raymond, Hattie Mabel, Ralph Glen, George Arthur, and Chester Roy. Reuben died in a tragic accident in 1916, four months before the birth of their youngest son Chester. Life was a financial struggle after the death of Reuben. Chester, George, Hattie and Glen were placed in the Salt Lake Orphans Home and Day Nursery 2 July 1918, and although Agnes longed to get them back, she never did. Agnes suffered with crippling arthritis, her son George recalls his mother was bedridden and that he, who was a small statured boy, could easily lift his mother and turn her over in bed. Chester was placed out in foster care and never returned, this caused great stress on Agnes, she was heartbroken.
