May was the oldest daughter of Cora Pickens ELLIS GILES and William Jacob Morgan GILES, who are buried near her in the GILES family plot at Harriman Cemetery on Walnut Hill. She married once, to Christopher Columbus HUNLEY. She gave birth to their five daughters, three who grew to adulthood, and two, buried next to her, that didn't. She and CC Hunley separated but didn't divorce for years. The girls grew up with May whose wages as a Harriman telephone operator supported them. May's deep, rich voice distinguished her from all the other operators in town. She was frequently addressed as "Sir" on the phone. She was known as one of the wittiest women in Roane County. She doted on her family - her parents, children, grandchildren, siblings (nine of eleven who survived babyhood), and a multitude of nieces and nephews. Honest and outspoken, her candor made her a cherished friend to many. As a strong, independent woman, she was a role model to many local women and girls in the late 1940s and '50s. ~TnType
