One killed, another hurt in explosion

A Fritch man was killed and another critically injured Tuesday morning in an explosion at the Colorado Interstate Gas Company's Sanford Field Compressor Station west of Fritch.

Gaylon Anderson, 24, was pronounced dead on arrival at North Plains Hospital at 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Doyle Sanders, 23, of Fritch, was listed in critical condition this morning at Northwest Texas Hospital. He reportedly suffered massive head injuries in the explosion.

Wayne Tiller of the Colorado Interstate public relations office in Colorado Springs said the explosion was the result of a pressure build-up in an eight-inch natural gas pipeline.

The cause of the pressure build-up was unknown this morning.

The men were preparing to clean a filter in the pipeline, a normal maintenance procedure, Tiller said. The cover over the filter flew off during the explosion, striking Anderson and Sanders.

No fire was involved, he added.

Services for Anderson will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Fritch Church of Christ with Darnell Boyd, pastor of Gardner Street Church of Christ in Borger, and Bill Driver, pastor of Fritch Church of Christ, officiating.

Burial will be in Westlawn Cemetery by Minton-Chatwell Funeral Directors.

Anderson had been a resident of Fritch for 24 years. He was a member of the Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Kerri; his mother Aleene Anderson of Fritch; and three sisters, Sandra Anderson of Fritch, Twila Brittian [sic]of Fritch and Mrs. Nelda Miley of Wheeler.
