Brazilian Military, Political Leader. Castelo Branco served as President of Brazil from April 15, 1964 to March 15, 1967. His early adult life saw him serving in the Brazilian army where he would rise to marshal. Castelo Branco was named Chief of Staff of the Army by President Joao Goulart in 1963. A year later he was one of the leaders of a coup that toppled Goulart and chosen to serve as president. Castelo Branco was seen as a "new economically stable Western ally" against communism by American companies and other international banks. He was given emergency powers to squash left wing opposition. Castelo Branco also issued new laws that limited democracy in the country and made it more "authoritarian". He believed that he was bringing order to the country and making it more stable. Castelo Branco was killed in a midair collision of small aircraft several months after leaving office.
