June McCay Higgins

A memorial service for June McCay Higgins, 93, of Thomasville is 10 o'clock, Monday, February 15 at Thomasville First United Methodist Church. The Reverend Mike Huling and Reverend Bob Dixon will officiate. A private internment service for the family will be at Laurel Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Higgins, who died February 11, 2010, was born in Linden, Indiana, on June 15, 1916, to the late Lawrence O. McCay and Grace Wills M. Baldwin. Mrs. Higgins moved to Thomasville in 1939 after leaving New Richmond, Indiana, where she was raised and educated. In Thomasville, she worked at the National Biscuit company as a bookkeeper, and while living there met her future husband, Keith Higgins. They were married in Fort Myers, Florida, after his return from the Pacific Theater where he served during World War II. The couple returned to live in Thomasville three years later.

Mrs. Higgins was a homemaker and for several years, a beloved teacher at First United Methodist Church's Happy Times Kindergarten. Later, she was employed by Southwestern State Hospital as a Pharmacy Technician. June was a talented musician who began playing the piano when she was three years old. While living in Indiana, she sang with her sister Evelyn on a local radio station. After her move to Thomasville, she played the piano for the troops at the local U.S.O. Until a year ago she continued to play the piano to entertain her friends, family and residents of local nursing homes.

Mrs. Higgins was a member of her church choir for many years. She sang and danced in Junior Service League productions of the Follies while a member of that service organization. She also served as a member of the Thomas County Historical Society, the Cultural Center, Landmarks, and the Arts Guild. Her homemade cinnamon rolls, noodles, and pies were legendary.

She is survived by her children, Diana H. Richards and John Keith Higgins (Jackie), a sister, Martha M. Rush. She is also survived by her grandchildren James L. Richards, Jr., J. Dirk Richards (Kelly), McCay Higgins Manwaring (Kevin), and Jennifer Higgins. Also surviving are five great grandchildren: Dylan Keith, Tanner Ross and Nikolas Cooper Richards and James Lyle ("Jack") III and Catherine Elizabeth Richards.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, John Keith Higgins, and by three sisters, Evelyn M. Haygood and Doris Ann M. Murray of Indiana and Betty Jo M. Schober of California.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 425 North Broad Street, Thomasville, GA 31792 in Mrs. Higgins' name.
