Veteran of the War of 1812.

He is the son of Isaac Cronk and Martha Rhodes. (Martha Rhodes Cronk was buried at Kent Cliffs. The old burial ground is now under the waters of the Kent Reservoir, and the tombstones at least were moved to higher ground near by.)

James Cronk, born at Cold Spring, N.Y. (Ayres) probably, born in now town of Kent, or Putnam Valley, in 1777, married Abigail Warner or Worner, probably of Rochester, N.Y. He lived at Clarence Hollow, Niagara County, New York; now Clarence, Erie County, where he had a farm and a race track.
He was elected or appointed Sherriff of Niagara County, N.Y, February 18, 1818; and officiated at the hanging of the three Thayer brothers. He went to Michigan, in 1831, prospecting and purchased 200 acres of land, where the City of Flint, now stands. He died the same summer and is buried in the Cronk Cemetery, near Flint.
The above information mostly from Seymour A. Ayres, of Saginaw, Michigan who claims to have married in the Cronk Family.
Mr. Cronk served in the Niagara County Militia from 1809 to 1819; Lieutenant in 1809; Captain in 1811; 1st Major in 1815; Lieut, Colonel in 1816, and continued until his appointment as Sheriff; in 1819, Hibbard was appointed in his place.
It is said on this end of the line, that Mr. Cronk, became demented after hanging the Thayers and that he died in Erie County N.Y.
He had 10 Children:
- James Warner Cronk, b, 10 September 1802, probably at Lima,
- John Farrand Cronk, b, 9 April 1804, at Cold Spring, N.Y.
- Martha Rhodes Cronk, b, 23 June 1808.
- Julia Cronk, b, 28 May 1810.
