He began his Teaching career in Chester, Georgia at a salary of $20 a week. After 4years on the job, he was drafted into the Army Air Corps, where he served as a Communications Specialist during World War II from 1942 until 1946. He returned home and became Principal of Bonaire High School in September 1946. After the school burned down 2 years later, Perdue attended Mercer University and received his Master's Degree. He then began a brief stint at Lanier High School in Macon, Georgia as a biology teacher. Beginning in 1949, he served as Assistant Principal and Coach at Warner Robins High School for 2 years. On July 1, 1951, he was recalled to active duty in the U. S. Air Force, serving in Thule, Greenland until his discharge in 1953 at the Rank of Colonel. In September 1953, he became Principal of Lindsey Elementary School in Warner Robins, Georgia. He became Principal of Warner Robins High School in Warner Robins, Georgia in 1956. On January 1, 1961, he took office as Superintendent of the Houston County School System after defeating incumbent Lewis Tabor in the March election. He served for 19 years from 1961 until 1980 when he retired after 41 years of service. He served during desegregation. He was third district director with the Georgia Association of Educators. He was a Director of Third District with the Georgia Association of School Superintendents Advisory Board, President of the Third District of Georgia Association of School Superintendents, Chairman of the American Association of School Administrators, Chairman of Impact Aid for Education and the National School Board Association.
He received over 35 plaques for Outstanding Leadership in Education in Houston County, the Third District and State and National Honors, Educational Consultant from Georgia for European Schools, David A Perdue Day Proclamations from the cities of Warner Robins, Georgia, Perry, Georgia and Centerville, Georgia. He was the recipient of the Good Government Award from the city of Warner Robins Area Chamber of Commerce. He was honored by the Houston County Board of Education with the naming of a newly built school, David A Perdue Elementary School in 1993. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Warner Robins, Georgia where he was Ordained as a Deacon.
He was married to Gervaise Wynn Perdue on June 4, 1947, they were married for 49 years at his passing.
