A funeral Mass for the Rev. Donald J. Kemper, a priest and lawyer in the Diocese of Jefferson City, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Our Lady of Loretto Catholic Church, 11725 Bellefontaine Road, Spanish Lake. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, 5239 West Florissant Avenue.

Father Kemper, 54, was killed Friday while vacationing in Aspen, Colo., when a car jumped a curb onto the sidewalk to avoid hitting a dog. Father Kemper was hit from behind.

Father Kemper, who was from St. Louis, attended Most Holy Rosary Catholic School at 4324 Margaretta Avenue; the former McBride High School in north St. Louis; and Kenrick Seminary in Shrewsbury. He attended North American College in Rome, and was ordained in Rome in 1954.

He got a doctoral degree in history from the University of Missouri in 1963 and helped establish the Newman Center at the university the same year. In 1981, he got a law degree from the University of Missouri. Since receiving his degree, Father Kemper had combined ministry with legal work for Shelter Insurance Co. in Columbia to help pay for his education.

He also did legal work for the Jefferson City diocese. He was to begin teaching at the Missouri University School of Law this fall.

Surviving are three brothers, Fred of Hazelwood, John of Creve Coeur and Richard of Fenton; and three sisters, LaVergne Davison of Spanish Lake, Lorraine Scott of Wappingers Falls, N.Y., and Sister Shirley Kemper, a nun assigned to St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Lemay.
