A Bad Accident

A most lamentable accident occurred this morning on passenger train No 5, California bound. It left LaJunta twenty-five minutes late, with Engineer William F. Lombard at the throttle. When approaching Benton, ten miles north, Engineer Lombard stepped to the side of his engine to look at some part of the machinery on the outside, and, leaning to far out, was struck upon the head by the stationery mail crane, which is a part of the fixtures of the Benton station, and hurled to the ground, striking the earth with terrific force, his body bounding for a distance of at least twenty feet. The train is the fast express, and, at the time was making in the neighborhood of fifty miles an hour, it is said. As soon as possible the train was stopped, backed up to where the unconscious engineer had fallen, and the poor man brought to LaJunta in a dying condition, and taken to the hospital, where Doctors Finney and Haskins ministered to his wants. At this writing he has not yet regained consciousness. His skull is said to be fractured. Three long scars mar the right temple, showing where the crane struck him. It is not thought possible that he can survive. The injured man is a resident of LaJunta, residing on Granada Street, where he has a wife and several children. Mr. Lombard is highly respected in this town and the accident has cast gloom over the entire community.
Willim F. Lombard was born in Perry Springs, Iowa 24 Dec 1859, oldest son of Sardin R. Lombard and Charlotte Smith Lombard. His siblings are: Safrona M. b 1857, Franklin b 1862, Louis b 1876. The family is listed on the 1880 Census in Otero County Colorado. He married Catherine Boner 15 Jan 1880 in Lyons, Rice, Kansas. He was employed by the A.T.S.F. Railroad. William and Catherine lived in LaJunta, Otero, Colorado. They had 4 children, William Vincent b 10 Oct 1881, Gertrude Mabel b 30 Jan 1885, Ernest Jefferson b 16 Sep 1889, Mary Theresa b 15 Feb 1894.
William F. Lombard died 28 Dec 1893 in LaJunta, Colorado. His widow, Catherine married Thomas Roberts 19 Aug 1896. There were 3 children born to that union: Edward Alva, 1898, Pearl Alice, 1900 and Florence Elizabeth, 1902. The family moved to Bremerton, Kitsap, Washington after 1910.
