John Agnew, 80; a retired professor

Dr. John Philip Agnew of Wellesley, a retired professor of history and politics at Pine Manor College, died yesterday in Briarwood Healthcare Center in Needham. He was 80.

Dr. Agnew was born in Ogden, Ill. He earned a bachelor's degree, a master's degree, and a doctorate at the University of Illinois.

He served in the Navy during World War II.

He taught modern European history and politics at Pine Manor College from 1954 until his retirement in 1987.

He leaves his wife; a daughter; three sons; two sisters; two brothers and three grandchildren.

A memorial service was held in October, 2001 at the Hartford Street Presybterian Church.

Ashes were scattered from the USS SLATER on October 21, 2001.
