Major league baseball player. John spent most of his career time playing catcher or center field for seven different teams during his 8-year career. His first two years were spent in the minors with the Worcester Ruby Legs (1882) and the Pittsburgh Alleghenys (1883-1884). He also played for the Brooklyn Atlantics / Grays (1884-1885), Washington Nationals (1886), Baltimore Orioles (1887) and for the Brooklyn Ward's Wonders in 1890 where he made his final appearance on August 23, 1890.
