JAS. WOOD DIES AT THE RIPE AGE OF 96 YEARS
MR. JAS. WOOD, one of the oldest and most substantial citizens of the county died yesterday at Pacolet in the 96th year of his age. The funeral and interment will take place this afternoon at Pacolet. The pall bears will be chosen from among the grand sons , among whom are Messrs. BEN HILL BROWN, and FRED L. BRYANT of Spartanburg.
MR. WOOD was a veteran of the Mexican and Civil wars. He was one of the most highly honored and beloved men in Spartanburg county. He bore the proud distinction of never having held or offered himself for public office. His family connection was exceedingly large. He is survived by 2 sons, and 4 daughters. Messrs. MOSES and A.N. WOOD of Gaffney; MRS. R.R. BROWN , Cowpens, MRS. W.BRYANT and MISS T.E. WOOD of Pacolet and MRS. SALLIE LIPSCOMB of Gaffney.
He was born and raised on a plantation near Pacolet. He led a very quiet life, was a kind neighbor, a just man and fond of peace. He lived on the farm all his life, until some years ago when on account of age and feebleness he moved to the town of Pacolet. For the past two months he had kept his bed. His death was like his life, peaceful. After 96 years the machinery of the body gave way and life went out.
