FUNERAL OF OLD SOLDIER IS HELD

EARL HATHAWAY IS LAID TO REST IN ALTA MESA BY MEMBERS OF G.A.R.

Services are of Semi-Private Nature- Ritual Ceremony Read by Former Conrades

The remains of the late Earl Hathaway of 425 Ruthven avenue, whose death took place Thursday evening, June 6th, were laid to rest this forenoon at Alta Mesa Cemetery. The funeral services were of a semi-private nature, only a few relatives and close friends and a detail of members of McKinley Grand Army Post attending. There was no religious service other than the ritualistic ceremony of the Grand Army of the Republic, which was read by Comrades N.S. Price and D.N. McKee, an invocation at the house and commitment and prayer at the graveside.
Acting as pallbearers were Comrades H.F. Perry and H.M. Welcott, and the Messrs. W. Hanson, Neil, Lewis and Frank Taylor, the latter four relatives of the deceased and his family. The Grand Army veterans in attendance, battle worn warriors they were, and themselves recognizing
the fact that soon or late they will be called upon to volunteer for special service in the Grand Army of the departed, performed their last sad offices for the dead in true military style, and with the tenderness befitting the true heroes that they are.
Many friends of the family, though few knew when the funeral was to be held, contributed liberally of beautiful flowers, and an especially splendid floral donation was a large bunch of lillies, the gift of the Palo Alto Elks. Present from out of town to attend the services were L.P. Hathaway of Ventura, and H.O. Hathaway of Sherwood, sons of the deceased and both former residents of Palo Alto. The only other surviving child is Mrs Mollie E. Morehouse of Youngstown, Ohio, who of course was too far away to be present. The late Mr Hathaway's soldier record covered a period of four years and three months. He enlisted for the "three months service" in the 11th Illinois Infantry at Freeport, Illinois, re-enlisted in the 46th Illinois where he served three years, then completing the long? service in Battery K of the 2nd Illinois Light Artillery, participating in all the heavy campaigns and battles of the west.
