Guatemalan Military, Political Leader. Ubico y Castaneda served as President of Guatemala from 1931 to 1944. He received a commission in the Guatemalan army in 1897 and spent his early adult life in military service. Ubico y Castaneda also served as provincial governor during this time. He would continue to serve in both the military and the government. In 1931, with support of liberals and progressives, Ubico Y Castaneda was elected president. His administration started programs to help bring a better life for Guatemalans. His government was friendly to the United States, particularly during World War II and this was rewarded with tariff reductions and military armaments. As time went on, his administration started to become unpopular in the country. Ubico y Castaneda eliminated all political opposition and democratic activity in the country. On June 22, 1944 he got rid of the freedom of speech and the press. The next day Ubico y Castaneda was overthrown in a coup and he fled to the United States where he passed away.
