US Army General. A 1938 graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant through the Reserve Officer Training Corps. During World War II he was an Intelligence officer in the China-Burma-India Theater. During the Korean War he served as the 3rd Infantry Division's Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations. In 1964 he became commander of the 25th Infantry Division and led it in Vietnam from 1965 to 1966. Weyand was promoted to Lieutenant General in 1968, and from 1969 to 1970 he was Military Advisor to Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge during the talks held to negotiate an end to the Vietnam War. In 1970 he was promoted to General, and from 1970 to 1972 Weyand was the last commander of Military Assistance Command -- Vietnam, overseeing the final withdrawal of US forces. In 1973 he was appointed commander of US Army, Pacific, and later that year was named the US Army's Vice Chief of Staff. In 1974 he was appointed Chief of Staff, serving until his 1976 retirement. After retiring Weyand served as Vice President of First Hawaiian Bank and was active in civic and veterans organizations. He was a graduate of the Army Command and General Staff College, the Armed Forces Staff College and the Army War College. General Weyand's awards included the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Distinguished Service Cross, five Distinguished Service Medals, the Silver Star, two Legions of Merit, and three Bronze Star Medals.
