President of Cuba. Grau San Martin served as President of Cuba for two non-consecutive terms (1933-1934 and 1944-1948). His early adult life saw him pursue the medical field. Grau San Martin was appointed provisional president after a coup deposed President Carlos Manuel de Céspedes. He was forced to resign in 1934 after trying to adopt policies that the United States didn't agree with. After spending time in exile, he returned to Cuba and re-entered the political life. In 1944 Grau San Martin was elected President. During this term, he brought about numerous social programs, but opposition and corruption hampered his administration. After leaving office in 1948, he stayed in Cuban politics until the Cuban Revolution of 1959 when he retired.
