William Surby, as a young man, joined the British Army in June of 1815. Assigned to the 66th Foot he was part of the force guarding Napoleon Bonaparte on St. Helena. After Napoleon's death in 1821 his unit returned to England, where he married. Later he was sent to Kingston, Ontario, Canada and later to Fort George at the mouth of the Niagara River and Lake Ontario. After 20 years of service, he was discharged and lived nearby working as a gardener. Both he and his wife died of what is believed to be cholera in September, 1852.
He had one daughter and six sons, five of whom moved to the US and fought in the Civil War. His son Edward remained in Canada and eventually changed the spelling of his last name to SURBEY for reasons which are not entirely clear.
