Texas Death Records: William Avery Cate. died March 18, 1971, at the age of 78 years. He was widowed, a farmer and a grocery store keeper. Son of James Cate and Liza Jane Alsup. Informant, Mrs. Jack Howard.

William Avery Cate, 78, died at 3:45 p.m. Thursday in North Runnels Hospital after a sudden illness. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Spill Memorial Chapel with Bobby Bates, minister of Main St. Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will be in Shep Cemetery under direction of Spill Funeral Home. He was born in Mason County Sept 12, 1892. At an early age he moved with his parents to Nolan County where he lived and farmed for a number of years. He married Lucy Curry March 27, 1913, at Hilton. The family later moved to Shep where he and his wife operated a grocery store for a number of years. In 1964 Mr. and Mrs. Cate retired and moved to Winters. Mrs. Cate died in 1965. A son, James, also preceded him in death in 1962. Mr. Cate was a member of the Church of Christ. Survivors include one son, Wayland of Amarillo; one daughter, Mrs. Jack Howard of Odessa; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Pete Grisham, Mardell Shedd, Leon Shedd, Ray Young, Raymond Talley and R. C. Watts Jr.
