Obituary - The Perth Courier - Jan. 2, 1903
King - A familiar and respected figure has been removed in the person of Mr. James King, lock master at Beveridge's Bay. Deceased paid a visit to his daughter, Mrs. John T. Devlin, Drummond Street, on Monday, December 15, and was shortly afterwards taken very ill with typhoid fever. He was nursed faithfully by his daughter, but to no avail, for on the Monday previous to Christmas he died. Mr. King was born in Pike Falls in 1839, the son of Patrick King, dead some fifteen years, and was consequently sixty three years of age. He founded a homestead near the Ferry, where he carried on the occupation of farming until some five years ago. At that time he was made the lock master, which position he faithfully filled. Mr. King was a favorite keeper of the locks with the water-travelling public. In politics, he was an ardent Reformer, and before being placed in the position he occupied at the time of his death was a strong force in the Liberal ranks of North Elmsley. He was a member of the Elmsley Township Council for sixteen years, that length of time speaking very forcibly of the confidence his electorate placed on his ability and good judgment. About thirty-eight years ago he was married to Catherine Coutts, who was born in Scotland. His wife, four sons and a daughter survive; Peter, William, James and John, of Elmsley, and Mrs. J. T. Devlin, town. Two sisters are also living, Misses Margaret and Mary. The funeral took place on Wednesday morning, December 24, from the residence of his daughter to Oliver's Ferry Cemetery.
