Ken L. Davis, 44, Miami County Sheriff, died Monday night, Oct. 31, 1994, of cancer at his rural Spring Hill home in Miami County.

The son of Kenneth and Margy Loy Davis, he was born on August 10, 1950, in Kansas City, Missouri. He lived most of his life in Johnson County.

He was married to Dianne McHenry on June 27, 1990 in Miami, Oklahoma.

Sheriff Davis began his career in law enforcement in 1979 with the Edgerton Police Department, where he worked for a brief time. He left there to join the Olathe Police Department and worked there for about six years. He came to the Miami County Sheriff's Department in 1985. He was promoted to Cheif Deputy in 1988 and to Undersheriff in April, 1993.

Following the retirement of Sheriff Dan Morgan, he was appointed Sheriff and began his official duties on May 13 of this year and continued in that capacity until his death.

He had been an active member of the Kansas Sheriff's Association and Kansas Law Enforcement Planning Association.

He was an antique gun enthusiast and Civil War history buff. He was known for his great sense of humor.

Surviving are his wife Dianne Davis of the home; a son, Lee Davis of Edwardsville, Kansas; a daughter, Rachel Davis of Edwardsville; a stepson David Meyers of Orlando, Florida; a stepdaughter Cheryl Meyers of Shawnee; his parents, Kenneth and Margy Davis of Merriam, Kansas; two brothers Barry Davis of Denver, Colorado and Dean Davis of Golden, Colorado; and two sisters, Carol Klohr and Susan Davis, both of Houston, Texas.

The family suggests contributions to the Kansas City Hospice in care of Wilson and Son Funeral Home.

Ken had a great love for kids. Following his death, his wife Dianne came to the current Sheriff Frank Kelly with an idea to start a program to help families in need provide Christmas gifts for their children.

With numorous volunteers from the Sheriff's Office, other Law enforcement agencies within Miami County and lots of support from the community the Miami County Cops for Tots Angel Tree program was started for the Chrismas season 1995. From that first season the program has grown and many children every year are provided with christmas gifts and christmas meal. With out the assistance of this program many children might go without over this special time of year.

Ken's love and Dianne's desire to do something in honor of Ken started this very special program and I am very happy to have been one of the first volunteers to be involved. www.copsfortots.org
