WILLIAM M BABBS

William M.Babbs was born in Rising Sun, Indiana, September 11, 1835 and died at his home in Newton,Illinois,October 12, 1923, at the age of 88 years, 1 month and one day,the last of a family of thirteen children. He was stricken more than seven years ago with paralysis,from which he never entirely recovered. He united with the Methodist Episcopal church in Indiana, when a boy of 14 and several years after coming to Illinois, he united with the Methodist protestant church at Falmouth and remained a member there until death.
He enlisted in the army September 11, 1861 in Company K, Thirty Eighth Illinois Infantry,serving his country until discharged in 1865, was a member of the Masonic order since 1872, was twice married, first to Miss Permelia c.Hensley,January 1855, to which union were born eleven children, Mrs. Eliza Whistler,Mrs.Elizabeth Foltz and Edward R.babbs of Oregon, James L, Amanda and John W. died in infancy,Herman E., Mrs. Zella M.Beals and Jesse F.of Newton,William W.and Samuel T. preceded their father in death.The mother died in June 1897. The second marriage was December 28, 1897 to Mrs. Maggie M.Broderick and one son,Loren M.was born to them. One stepson,Everett E. Broderick of Aberdeen, Idaho,thirty one grandchildren and twenty one great grandchildren, with sorrowing wife, also survive.
"Uncle Billy" as he was know often called was a kind husband and father, a successful financier, an honest,upright citizen and when in health was ever lending a helping hand to those about in need.
Funeral services for Mr.Babbs were conducted at the residence,420 W.Reynolds street, Newton at 10:30 am Sunday with Rev. L.A. Magill in charge, interment was the Riverside cemetery under the auspices of the Masons.
Pallbearers were S.A.Conner, Ben D.Lowe,Oscar Ross,Fred Drake, Thomas C.Wright and A.E.Martin.Those in attendance from a distance were Mrs.Arminta Ray and daughter Gladys, Asbury McComas and son,Charles and Mr. and Mrs.William Carpenter,Rose Hill, Mrs.and Mrs.Henry Peck,Hidalog, Mrs.Tillie Butler and son Howard, Janesville, Mr.and Mrs.Thomas Blunk,Ingraham,Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Knight,son,Paul and daughter, Zelma, Metcalf, Ill.and W.M. McComas,Meron, Ind.
