Found in the Prince George's Co., 1798 Federal Tax assessment list is, "Slave owner: Joseph Crown, lives in Virginia, Stephen Joy, Supt. (New Scotland, Oxen & Bladensburg) 1 slave. Joseph Crown, lives in Virginia, Wm. Ross, Supt. (Eastern Branch & Rock Creek) l slave." After their marriage in 1798 they moved to Shenandoah Co., VA where Mary Slater's brother and sister were living. There was a deed recorded in Prince George's Co., MD in 1801 where Joseph Crown sold to Electius Edelen "one Sorrell horse, one cow & calf, one heifer, six head of Hogs, one Bed Bedstead & furniture, plantation utensils, 500 pounds of Tobo. and crop of Corn fodder & Tobacco now on the plantation."

From 18 July 1814 to 31 Jan 1815, Joseph W. Crown served as Corporal in Capt. Jesse Carter's Co., 4th Regt. Virginia Militia. After the war they moved to Hopewell Twp., Licking Co., OH where they were on the 1820 census. In 1828 Joseph W. Crown was on a Personal Property tax list in Muskingum Co. They were on the 1830-1850 census in Hopewell Twp., Muskingum Co., OH. Joseph W. Crown applied for bounty land for his service in the War of 1812 on 22 Jan. 1851. He applied again on 27 Mar 1855 as Joseph W. Crown, age 83.
