FINAL CALL FOR WILLIAM D. DAILY
Veteran of Civil War and Former County Official, Passed Away Last Night At Madison
William D. Daily, 88, one of the well known veteran soldier citizens of Decatur county, died last night at Madison, where he had been taken for treatment only four days ago, after a long illness. The body will arrive here this evening and the funeral will be announced later.
The deceased was a native of Decatur county, and was born on a farm in Marion township, January 9, 1830, when that region was a veritable wilderness. His father was a pioneer Methodist minister and held many high positions in early times. Mr. Daily emigrated to Illinois in 1854, where he spent eight years in farming. In 1862 he returned to Greensburg where he has ever since resided. In 1864 he joined the 134th Indiana regiment and served under Capt. Joe Drake.
In 1888 Mr. Daily was honored by being elected county treasurer and in 1890 he was reelected. In 1892 he was elected county commissioner and again in 1894. He was elected to the city council several times and was active in public affairs for many years. He was a good business man, popular with the people. He was a Republican.
Some thirty years ago he engaged with the late H.H. Dowden in the monument business end they did a large business for many years. Prior to the Mr. Daily was associated with Jesse M. Thomson and John Gillespie in the grocery business in the 70's on the south side of the square.
Mr. Daily was married Nov. 5, 1848, to Miss Lydia Percival, who survives her husband after a wedded life of almost seventy years. They have two daughters, Miss Mollie Snyder and Miss Rebecca and two grand-children, Miss Flora Snyder and William Snyder, the latter now in government in Puerto Rico.
