Henry Newton Ambrose died at the age of 88 due to chronic dilatation of the heart in Rebecca, Turner County, Georgia on July 24, 1936 at 11:00 am. He was the son of John William Ambrose and Manery Mulkey, both of Tennessee.

He was a retired farmer. He served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War.
Both of his parents died early in his life. His father died about 1850 and his mother died during the Civil War. He had one sister at home. He enlisted in Company Gordon's Georgia 1st Infantry Regiment on 20 September 1861 at the age of 13 and then he was transferred to Company C, Georgia 13th Infantry Battalion on 26 April 1862. Then on December 15, 1862 he was transferred to Company B, Georgia 63rd Infantry Regiment. He was promoted to Full Musician on 21 December 1862. On January 31, 1863 he was found in the C.S.A. General Hospital #3 in Greensboro, North Carolina. He was discharged from the C.S.A and war duties on May 1, 1865.

Upon mustering out of the C.S.A, he could not find his sister. She had married, and he did not know the name of the man she married. So, Henry drifted either to Forsyth or Bartow County. He made a loving driving a Dray hauling freight and people

He married Sarah Elizabeth Puckett in 1874. She was the daughter of Harris and Sarah Waters Puckett. To their union, they had four children: William Andrew Ambrose (1876-1921), , Mildred Asilee Ambrose Mangum (1878-1957), John Henry Ambrose (1880-1954), and Nancy Elizabeth "Lizzie" Ambrose Owens (1882-1930).

His wife Sarah died in May 1882 shortly after Lizzie was born. Elizabeth must have known she was going to die because she told her husband, Henry, if she could have one wish it would be to have her first cousin, Nancy Elizabeth Baily to help raise her Children. Sarah Elizabeth is buried near Tucker Georgia, but she has a memorial stone in Rainey Cemetery.

Henry met and he married Nancy Elizabeth Bailey on January 21, 1883 by Rev. J.W. Braziel, Gwinnett County, Georgia per his wife's last dying wish. She was the daughter of James and Elizabeth Waters Bailey. they had 7 children: Ollie Ambrose (1983-1983--died soon after birth), Missouri Clementine Ambrose Taylor (1885-1966), Ella Ambrose (1886 and died 1886 shortly after birth), Ida Florence Ambrose Lamb (1888-1970), Emory Scott Ambrose (1891-1967), Thomas Watson Ambrose (1892-1963), and Adolphus Clifford Ambrose (1896-1900).

Mr. Ambose moved to Turner County with his family in 1897 from Gwinnett County, Georgia. Before moving to Turner County, they moved to Coffee County to the town of Ambrose, Georgia. Her father owned a grocery store there and during that time, Ambrose was given the name of her father. This is what his daughter Missouri is reported to have said.

The following exerpt is from the "Ambrose Book" by Dolly Taylor shared with me by my cousin Nola:

As of 1990, "The old Ambrose house is still standing in Turner County, Georgia in which all the Ambrose children were living when they married. Beatric Mangum Overby and me went by to see it, and she gave me the information. Asilie and her father ran a grocery store and post office at the end of the dirt road and paved road coming from Ashburn, Georgia. Beatrice said her mother and father ran away and got married. She said Grandpa Ambrose was a strict man. It looks like he wanted to hold on to his family and keep them at home as long as he could."

Ollie and Ella are buried in Gwinnett County. Clifford is buried in the same cemetery as his parents.

Mr. Ambrose was buried in the Amboy Cemetery (now known as Rainey Cemetery) on July 25, 1936.
