Mrs. Bessie Mae Hersey Newell, age 88, of Douglas passed away Monday, January 18, 2010, at the Shady Acres Health & Rehabilitation Center, following an extended illness. Mrs. Newell, a native and life long resident of Coffee County, was the daughter of the late Monroe Hersey and the late Beadie Hutcheson Hersey. She was also preceded in death by, her husband, John Green "Johnny" Newell, a daughter, Jo Ann N. Merritt, and 5 brothers, William R. Hersey, Fisher Hersey, Estalee Hersey, Ernie Hersey, and Samuel Hutcheson. Mrs. Newell was a member of the North Side Baptist Church. Survivors include: 2 Sons: Cecil Newell of Broxton, Ga.; and Rev. Jerry (Sandra) Newell of Douglas, Ga.; 1 Daughter: Jean N. Gieger of Douglas, Ga.; 3 Grandchildren, whom she reared: Michael Roy Merritt , and Patsy Lynn Burkett, both of Douglas, Ga. and Walter Lamar Merritt of Ambrose, Ga.; 12 Grandchildren, 23 Great Grandchildren, and 7 Great Great Grandchildren.; 3 Sisters-In-Law: Lavene Purvis Hersey, and Montine Meeks Hersey, both of Douglas, Ga., and Louise Varnedore Hutcheson of Palatka, Fla.; Special Niece: Shirley (Jimmy) Merrill of Apopka, Florida; Special Friends: Barbara (Gene) Chestnut of Broxton, Ga.; and Roy (Mary) Merritt of Ambrose, Ga.; Several Nieces, Nephews, and Other Relatives.Funeral Services were held Wednesday, January 20, 2010, at 11:00 A.
