Olla Mae Richards was born to Will and Lena Ballengee in Granite, Oklahoma on December 10, 1913. She was the third child of three brothers and two sisters. Olla Mae came with her family to California in 1920. They came to Tulare and eventually settled in Taft. Olla Mae attended Taft High School for three years before marrying. She obtained her high school diploma later at Taft College.

Olla Mae married Tommy Richards in 1930 and lived in Taft, Ventura and Maricopa. She was a member of First Assembly of God Church in Taft where she held positions of Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent. Olla Mae worked retail at Ruth's Frock Shop and Judy's Dress Shop and later was a clerk at Bakersfield Savings and Loan in Taft. Widowed, Olla Mae moved to Bakersfield in 1970. She was a member of the First Assembly of God Church and resided at Assembly Manor for many years. She had many acquaintances and a special, lifelong friend, Belva Shepherd of Taft. Olla Mae recently resided in Glenwood Gardens Nursing Home in Bakersfield.

Olla Mae was preceded in death by her husband, Tommy Richards (1961), parents, Will and Lena, brothers, Louis, Loral and Glenn Ballengee, and sisters, Dorothy Parker and Fern Chapman. She is survived by her son, Bill and his wife, Kristine of Bakersfield; grandchildren, Tom Richards and Kandra Richards of San Luis Obispo, Merrie Richards of Bakersfield and Carol and Rob Melvin; and great-grandchildren, Ian and Ella Melvin of Roseville, California. She is also survived by sisters-in-law, Jean Ballengee of Taft and Ellen Ballengee of Santa Maria; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Son, Bill Richards, would like to thank Olla Mae's special friends, Beverly Robey, Don Arnold, sister-in-law, Jean Ballengee and nephew, Ron Chapman, who visited and comforted her. The phone calls and correspondence from Mary Glen Robinson and niece, Lola Rutledge, were greatly appreciated. The family wishes to thank the staff of Glenwood Gardens Skilled Nursing Facility, Colleen of Hoffman Hospice and Dr. Raju Patel for their thoughtful care of Olla Mae.

A graveside funeral service will be held for Olla Mae Richards on Tuesday, February 9, 2010, at 1:00 p.m. in the West Side District Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday morning from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at the Erickson & Brown Funeral Home.
