Leonard was the eldest son of Georg Adam Derringer and Eva Margareta Margutt. He was born on May 15, 1848 in Hesse, Germany and left the town of Brietenbrunn to immigrate to America with his family (parents, sister Katharina, brothers Balthasar and Phillip) in 1858. The family took the ship, William Nelson in late June from Le Havre, France and arrived in New York City on July 6, 1858.From there, they travelled to Ohio to re-unite with Georg's brother, Balthasar, who had immigrated to America in 1855 and then went to live in Ohio. The family lived in Madison Township in the county of Montgomery, where Georg worked on the farm of Aaron Miller.Sometime after this, Georg joined the Union Army and fought in the Civil War and died sometime around 1862 and left Leonard to help his Mom raise his sister, Katharina and brothers, Phillip, Balthasar (now called John), Adam (my great-grandfather and the first American born child in the family) and youngest son, Jacob. Later the family got their own home in Madison County, where Leonard worked as a farmer. Leonard married Sarah Jane Wolf in 1875 (the same year he became a naturalized citizen of the U.S.) and they had 2 sons, Milton J. and George W. Derringer. Leonard passed away on August 10, 1927 from a Cerebral Hemorrhage, caused byChronic Myocardial Insuffiency and arteriosclerosis.
