Barbara J. (Smith) Canwell, 68, a resident of Brockton for many years, a resident of Brockton, Massachusetts, died unexpectedly on February 6, 2010 while vacationing in Florida. Born and raised in Braintree, she had been a resident of Brockton for the past 45 years. After graduating from Wheelock College, she taught Kindergarten through the Head Start program. Later, she worked until retirement in the human resources department at Cumberland Farms in Canton. She was a long-time and active member of the Good Shepherd Church in Brockton. She enjoyed traveling extensively with friends to far away places, but she was most happy spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, at family gatherings. She is survived by two daughters, Mary (Terry) Pedro and her fianc Del Lane of Taunton, Lorie A. McGrath and her husband David of Londonderry, N.H; and a son, Richard W. Canwell of Brockton; 4 grandchildren, David, Daniel, Morgan and Gretchen; a brother, Robert Smith, retired Braintree Police Officer of Rockland, nephew Stephen Smith and his wife Cheri of Colorado Springs, CO. She also leaves behind many beloved family and friends in Massachusetts and Maine. A funeral service will be held on Friday, February 12, at 10 a.m. in the McMaster Funeral Home, 86 Franklin St. (Rt 37), Braintree. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to visit the funeral home Thursday, 5-8 p.m. Interment Blue Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations in her name may be made to the National MS Society, 733 Third Ave., 3rd Floor, New York, NY 10017.
